I think this is true for many people! But the question I'm asking is: why do we consider physical appearance to be the socially appropriate or relevant thing to comment on, even if we're just trying to fill conversational space? Why not "she seems really happy" or "is she recovering well?" Why is prettiness the go-to, catchall compliment?
