The point that I’m trying to make here is that our team actually wasn’t functioning well. We kept making dumb mistakes that ticked off our readership because we didn’t know enough about other cultures. So, in fact, someone who knew more about certain segments of our readership is actually likely to do a better job than someone who doesn’t—which means our team would be really, tangibly benefited by hiring someone who wasn’t white.
